Ask the Expert – Jen Wilson


This week we’re chatting to the super talented & inspiring Jen Wilson, founder of Freedom in Training & the Warrior Woman Project.

Here’s what Jen had to say:

What type of training did you have to do to become a personal trainer?

I chose the further education route. HND Health, Fitness & Exercise which included Level 2 gym & Level 3 Personal Trainer qualifications then on to BSc Sport & Exercise Science. Training & learning is ongoing once you are qualified, finding your niche & becoming the expert in that. I added in NLP Master Practitioner training because I identified most of my clients were not achieving & maintaining their goals because their head was holding them back & they were self-sabotaging their results.

What has been the highlight of your career?

Until yesterday it was presenting on stage at the IFS in Blackpool with ICG. Now it is being nominated & short listed as mentor of the year award with Business Women Scotland.

What advice would you give to someone looking to follow your career pathway?

Do your research. Know what type of client you want to work with & find out what qualifications you need to work with that particular group. Before picking your course speak to other trainers who work with the same client group to see who they did their qualifications through. Think about the bigger picture & don’t believe the marketing of the training provider. Learn about marketing and business development from day 1 and start building your knowledge & brand as soon as possible. It is a tough business to be in & you need to be prepared to work hard to prove yourself. Be open to learning from everyone you meet. Question & investigate everything you learn.
