Realise your ambitions – Career Planning Advice. Part 2

With Step 1, Self Assessment completed, you should now have a clearer idea of your goals and your individual preferences.

This will give you the basis to be able to complete the next two steps:

Step 2: Research

This step is about exploring the occupations and learning areas that interest you. Once you have some idea of your occupational preferences you can research the specific skills and qualifications required for those occupations.

Explore occupations that interest you and ask yourself how do my skills and interests match up with these occupations?

Pinpoint the qualifications you need to move to the next step in your career or to make the move to a new career path. If you’re not sure, search job postings and job ads, conduct informational interviews, research job descriptions.

Determine what options you have to gain these skills or qualify for these occupations?

At the end of this step you will have a list of preferred occupations and/or learning options.

Step 3: Make a Plan

Use all you have learnt about your skills, interests and values together with the information you have gathered to create your career plan. Develop a timeline and action plan, being sure to set specific goals and priorities.

At the end of this step you will have a plan to help you explore your options further or a plan which sets out the steps to help you achieve your next learning or work goal.
